@TastingHistory the obligation to get permission before even the most minor of things is part of the monastic nature of this knighthood: in monastic life it is the same, as it supposedly is test and proof of the exercise of humility(a very fundamental concept in all christian contexts, that is the basis of what christianity extending into secular life as rules of conduct is). Paired with the need of upholding a military standard of discipline it is not surprising that these are the idealistic outlines mentioned in the texts(however it should not be expected that the rules were actually adhered to).

My Aunt tells the story of going to her Aunt's home for lunch as my Grandmother was working. Something happened and Aunt Margaret wasn't home but Uncle George had come home for his lunch so gave her the same thing he was having, limburger cheese in rye bread and some lager. 😂

What a great video! If you were a Boy Scout in the Kansas City area, you may have attended camp or another event at Camp Naish, near Bonner Springs, Kansas. It's named for Theodore Naish, who was lost on the Lusitania, but his wife Belle survived. IIRC, the property was used for Scout camp almost from the beginning of the movement, and Belle spent her later summers in a cabin there. It's been used for Scouting events for over a century.

Wait - is there pink lemonade that *doesn't* taste like regular lemonade? Around here, if you add berries or flavoring to lemonade, we just call it "raspberry lemonade" or "strawberry lemonade".

My great grandmother (born 1900 here in England) used to think having a green coat was incredibly unlucky and wouldn't go anywhere near one. I wonder if a kind of folklore arose around it.

Useless fact: The famous and very funny British actress Miriam Margolyes is said to consume a raw onion, like eating an apple, every day and swears by its health benefits. Footnote: Marketing campaigns post the Lunar Landing almost all focused on association with NASA. Common was "as used by Astronauts" and "NASA approved" etc. It would be hilarious to look back at all these claims. A lots of stuff was sold by carny-type barkers in malls popups. Think fast talking Vince from ShamWow fame pimping an anti-gravity ballpoint pen developed by NASA for "use in space". The pin, as demonstrated could write upside down. It was years before we learned that the Soviets just sent pencils instead. The Smithsonian has both NASA and Soviet exhibits. The over-design of some of the NASA stuff is just absurd. You then move around to the Soviet stuff fulfilling an equivalent purpose and its simple, functional and cheap to make.

The History Theatre in St. Paul, Minnesota recently produced an original musical about the history of the Betty Crocker brand/identity and the people behind it called "I Am Betty". It's supposed to be pretty great, and while I missed its original run, I'm definitely planning on seeing it when they re-produce it during the 24-25 season

It is absolutely certain that the ancient Romans always pronounced the letter C like a K. I don't believe there is any Classical scholar that would say otherwise. Perhaps there are people who haven't really studied the Latin language who have developed fanciful theories about Latin pronunciation, but their ideas have no basis in historical reality.
